North of the great Himalaya lies Tibet. This ancient land unparalleled in it’s beauty and majesty. is often referred to as the roof of the world. It is the largest and highest plateau on earth. Most of Tibet lies on a plateau at an average elevation of 4000 m. The Kunlun Mountains rise on its northern frontier. Tibet covers an area of 1.2 million sq. km, and has a population of 2.3 millions. Tibet became accessible to Western visitors in the 1980s.
Despite of the various political upheavals and social and economic changes , Tibet still retains the aura that intrigued the early western travelers. It's friendly people with elaborate ornament and dresses, vast open space with blue skies, lush grassy lands with nomad (drokpa) yak herders, the high Himalaya mountains, broad valleys of barley fields, the turquoise lakes, fascinating monasteries with reincarnated lama all remain the same.
The mid spring to early fall (May through October) are the good season to visit Tibet. The weather during this period is mild with warms sunny days and cool chilly nights. July and August are the rainy months and the alpine valleys at this time of year become lush and speckled with wild flowers and blooming shrubs.
Most of our trips in Tibet begins in Kathmandu. We offer both cultural and pilgrimage tours, and treks to remote mountain region. The trips which include a trek is provided in full-scale service. Where as only hotel / guest-house accommodation with breakfast, transportation, a local guide and documentation services are provided for the touring trips. The standard of accommodation and the quality of the meals at the guest-houses is still sub standard compared to Nepal. This services sometimes need to be compromised.
There is now daily flight between Kathmandu and Lhasa. Visas to enter Tibet via Nepal must be applied through the Chinese embassy in Kathmandu. The Chinese embassy opens for visa processing on Monday, Wednesday and Friday. Passport are essential to obtain the visa even though you will be issued as a group visa issued in a separate paper.
