Although a trip to the classic base camp of Mt. Everest provides a life-time experience to most people - the trip to the advance base camp (ABC) of Mt. Everest situated at 6400m./ 20992ft which include a few days trekking offers a more intimate experience of visiting the world's highest peak.
We begin trip with a drive to Kodari - the Nepal / Tibet frontier town on the Nepal side of the borde town. After completing the immigration and customs formalities, we cross the 'Friendhsip Bridge' where we meet jeeps arranged by our Tibetan tour agent and then take a short ride to the Tibet side of border town, Zhangmu 2330m/7300ft. Here we check in through the Chinese side of immigration and customs formalities and we drive through steep winding road to Nyalam 3720m/12200ft. This town known as Kuti among Nepali traders was an important trading center for the Newar traders from Kathmandu before China's takeover of Tibet. In Nyalam, we spend 3 nights and explore the Tshongdu Chu valley leading to Mt. Shisapangma 8046m while getting well acclimatized for our trip to Mt. Everest base camp. |

After the acclimatization hikes in the Tshongdu Valley, we drive to Thingri 4310m/14150ft, once an important trading center for Sherpa traders from Solukhumbu . As vehicles carrying trekkers are only allowed all the way to Mt. Everest base camp, we camp at the Dza Rongphu monastery. Next day, early in the morning, we hike the 8km long road along the Dzakar Chu (river) to the classic Mt. Everest base camp situated at 5150m. This is the base camp for most expeditions that come to climb Mt. Everest following the East Rounbuk glacier and up the NE ridge via North Col. The view of the NE face of Mt. Everest with the NE ridge highlighting the left sky- line is dominating and impressive. During the spring climbing season, the base camp is filled with colorful tents giving an impression of an village adorned with flags of different countries fluttering along the Buddhist prayer flags.
The advance base camp of Mt. Everest is 3 days walk beyond the Mt. Everest base camp. We follow the East Rongbuk glacier to arrive at the Mt. Everest advance base camp. On our hike to the ABC, we place a camp at 5200m/17056ft and 5600m/18368ft. The ABC is situated between the North Col of Mt. Everest and the North East face of Changtse
After the visit to the ABC we make a quick descent to base camp and drive to Shigatse 3860m/12650ft which is Central Tibet's second largest city situated near the confluence of Nyang Chu and the mighty Tsangpo (Brahmaputra river). This sprawling market town of tree lined avenues main attraction is the monastic complex of Tashilhumpo, the seat of the Panchen Lama who was regarded second only to Dalai Lama in Tibet's cultural / political hierarchy. Onward Shigatse, we drive on the newly completed Shigatse - Lhasa highway and spend a full two days visiting the Potala and Norbulinkha palaces, Jokhang and Drepung monasteries and the colorful Barkhor market. We end this trip with a flight over the Eastern Himalaya to arrive in Kathmandu. |
