Three valleys namely the Khumbu Valley in the South, Rongbuk Valley in the North and Kharta Valley in East descend from the world’s highest peak – Mt. Everest. Among the 3 valleys – the Kharta Valley formed two smaller Karma Tsangpo and Kangshung Valley spreading at the East Face of Mt. Everest (the Kangshung Face) is considered most scenic with its forests of junipers, dwarf rhododendrons and birch covering the higher ridges while dense thickets of willows edging the creeks in the lower valley.
This Valley was first discovered by Howard Bury - member of the 1921 British Everest Reconnaissance team while searching for the eastern base of Mt. Everest. He dubbed this area 'garden of Eden' and a real Tibetan Shangri-La. In a letter to his wife, George Mallory also a member of this expedition and hero of the pre world war I expeditions to Everest wrote:
'I'm altogether beaten for words, the whole range of peaks from Makalu to Everest far exceeds any mountain scenery that I ever saw before... '
To begin this trek, we drive from Kathmandu to Kharta Qu – a Tibetan town situated by the Phu Chu river near the Rongbuk side of Mt. Everest base camp. From Karta Qu, the direct route to Kangshung base camp is via Langma La pass (17700ft./5240m.). However, in order to get well acclimatized during the trek, we choose the slightly longer alternative route over the Shau-La pass ( 15700ft./4790m.) – which is a lower pass to the SE of Langma La. After the crossing of Shau-La pass, enter the Karma Tsangpo Valley and then into the Kangshung Valley to arrive at the Kangshung base camp of the East Face of Mt. Everest.
Trekking in this valley offer an unique experience of hiking into a lush remote valley and a rare view of the Khangsung face (east face) of Mt. Everest and other peaks such as , Lhotse, Chomolonzo and other Himalayan peaks. To the local Teopa people and the Sherpas living on the other side of the mountain, this is a country blessed by Guru Rimpoche – the principal founder of Buddhism in Tibet.
