Cho-Oyu is an ideal peak to begin your primary 8000m climbs. The meaning of Cho-Oyu in Sherpa/Tibetan language may have derived from the turquoise color lakes (Cho-yu) on the South side of this mountain in Gokyo Valley. Among the 14 eight thousand meter high peaks, it is the 5th highest. In 19 October 1954 Austrian Herbert Tichy, Sepp Jochler and Sherpa Pasang Dawa made the first successful ascent of this mountain. Rising on the Nepal - Tibet frontier dominating the Nangpa Valley in the south and the vast Tingri plains in the north Cho-Oyu is the most popular 8000m peak of all 8000 meter peaks.

We place the ABC on the Gyabrakg Glacier 5,600m/18,368ft - next to the historic trading pass on the Nepal - Tibet frontier. During our stay at the ABC, we meet traders from Tibet crossing the pass for the Saturday market in Namche Bazar, with their yaks laden with readymade Chinese goods.

Arriving at the ABC, we take a few more days to get settled and prepare ourselves for the climb ahead. our climbing route will be the North West Ridge - the route followed by the Austrian team in 1954. Above ABC, we put 3 higher camps - at 6000m/19,680ft , 6,500m/21,320ft. and at 7,400m / 24,272ft.) for our attempt on the summit. The summit of offers the best views of Mt.
