Situated a little over 30 kilometers north of Kathmandu, the valley of Langtang lies hidden amidst the snow-capped peaks of the Langtang and Jugal Himal ranges. Inhabited by people of Tibetan origin, this valley, where Yaks abound, extends north towards Tibet bordered by high Himalayan walls. According to legend a lama (Buddhist monk) following a runway ox (lang in Sherpa / Tibetan) discovered this valley. Blessed by Guru Rimpoche ( principal founder of Buddhism in Tibet) this valley is also considered one of the 7 beyuls (protected land). Compare to other mountain areas in Nepal, the glaciers here descend at a comfortably low elevation.

We begin this trek at the entrance of Langtang National Park and pass through the Tamang/Sherpa village of Syabru, before entering the narrow gorge of Langtang Khola. Following the densely forested Langtang Khola, we encounter langur monkeys, deer and several species of Himlayan birds before reaching the hidden valley of Langtang which opens up to us as we view the magnificent massif of Langtang Lirung (7239m./ 23750ft.) at Ghora Tabela.

At Kyangjin, site of a Buddhist monastery and cheese factory, we camp two nights to explore the upper side of Langtang valley where glaciers from the mountains that resemble to a charcoal drawings come down to meet the lush alpine meadows. Staying high we watch the impressive color play of nature, as the setting sun changes from a gold bright to fading pink against the summits of these majestic mountains. If we are lucky, there is also a chance to sight the elusive snow leopard , recently seen here by a noted Australian climber.

On our return we take a higher trail and visit the to the sacred lake of Gosaikunda lake. The locals believe the lake was dug out by Shiva with his trident to quench during the great churning of the ocean between the gods and the rakshasas (anti gods). It is also said that the water from this lake is fed to a holy pond in Patan next to a 5 story Shiva temple in Patan, by a sub-terrain channel. After the tranquil sight of the likes in the Gosaikunda area, we cross the 4510m/ 15121ft high Lauribina pass and enter into the Hyolmo country. Though known as sherpa, the culture of the Hyolmo people differ from the culture of the Shepa people of Solukhumbu. They practice a unique culture which may have been a blend of Tibetan and Tamang culture.. The beauty of the 'apple cheeked' Hyolmo ladies are sung into songs and their houses are known tidiest in whole of Nepal. Having visited this land of 'beautiful' we end this trek at Sundarijal which is just a short ride from Kathmandu.
