Nepal Trek

About Trekking: Trekking is the best way to see Nepal. A trek in Nepal is different from a walk in the Sierra mountains or in the European Alps. Unlike the walks in the Sierra mountains or the Alps, trekking in Nepal offers a great opportunity to visit hill / mountain villages dwelled by people of different ethnic origin, learn about their life style and culture, play a sport with a local school kid and share a story with a village elder. Raised in the freedom of high hills and the mountains, Nepalese people are the friendliest of all and it is their company you will learn to enjoy most while you feel a profound peacefulness overwhelming your mind and soul breathing thin air amidst the high Himalayan mountains.

Where to trek: Depending on the time and area you would like to visit, a trek in Nepal can be done from a few days to over a month. Most treks begin after a drive to the nearest road head. Some treks require to fly in to gain convenient and efficient access to the mountain. Annapurna is the most popular region for trekking for treks in this region offer great mountain views and a diverse cultural encounter. As the treks in this region conveniently starts at a relative low terrain, there is no need to fly to a mountain airstrip. Flights to mountain destinations are sometime disrupted by weather which affects your trip itinerary.

When to trek: The traditional trekking season in Nepal mid September October to May. October and November is recognized having best weather for trekking for its mild warm weather and haze-less clear atmosphere. January is the coldest month of the year. Except for treks involving crossing of high passes, it is possible to trek even in January as the winter in Nepal Himalaya is usually dry with less snow on the mountain. During the spring, the middle hills area are covered in haze even though it is clear higher up. But this is the season of the blossom of Nepal's national flower -rhododendron. The monsoon season (June through September) is the rainy season. It is a good time to visit Kathmandu and for treks in high altitude meadows for viewing mountain flowers and research herbs.

Where to trek: Treks in the Khumbu (Everest) area offers the best of the 8000meter peaks of Nepal and a chance to meet and interact with mountaineers. Khumbu is the home of the Sherpa people who climb for a living. Nearly half of the mountaineering expeditions that come for Nepal Himalaya are destined for peaks in this region namely Mt. Everest, Lhotse, Pumori and Amadablam.

For those with limited time, Langtang Valley offers the best Himalayan experience. Langtang Valley lies just 30 km north of Kathmandu Valley. The mountains here are very picturesque and the people who live here have a very different culture from other Himalayan people of Nepal. A good trip gaining 4000m experience can be done in as little as one week period without taking a flight.

Kangchenjunga, Makalu, Manaslu, Mustang, Dhaulagiri, Ganesh Himal, Dolpa area offer the best alternative for visitors who are interested to explore high remote mountain areas - off from the beatan tourist trails!
