Despite being only 80km northeast of Kathmandu, Shisapangma (26286ft./8012m.) was for a long time one of the least known of the world’s fourteen highest peaks. This peak tucked behind the Jugal Himal on the Nepal – Tibet frontier was the was the last 8000 meter peak to be climbed and is the only one (8000m) peak entirely within Tibet. Known as Gosaithan in Nepal, regarded as sacred abode of god Shiva - it was first climbed in 1964 by Tibetan and Chinese mountaineers.
The trek to the South base camp of this mountain which ends with crossing of a 17000ft Kong Tsho La pass is said to one of Tibet's best kept secrets mainly for the reason this valley receives a lot less visitors as it is only accessible on foot compare to most other mountain areas in Tibet.
Except for a small settlement of yak herders near the trail head this area is undisturbed by permanent human settlement. This valley turns into a garden of mountain flowers in summer and early autumn. Higher up this valley opens up to spectacular mountains views of Jugal Himal range, tumbling glacier and holy lakes
We begin this trek in Nyalam , a former trading post for Nepali traders trading into Tibet near the Nepal – Tibet frontier. From Nyalam 12432ft./3790ft., we follow the Tshongdu Chu and take about 5 days to get to the high base camp of Shisapangma for the grand view of the South Face fo the Mt. Shisapangma
